The Dawoodi Bohras Partner with World Food Program USA To Fund Meals for Gaza

Under the guidance of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddinthe Dawoodi Bohras are committed to tackling food insecurity. Through Project Rise—a Dawoodi Bohra initiative addressing global development challenges — the community aims to fight global food insecurity and malnutrition.

Famine is imminent in Gaza. Over a million people have completely exhausted their food supplies and are facing catastrophic hunger and starvation. This is the highest number of people ever recorded as facing catastrophic hunger by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

The Dawoodi Bohra community has partnered with World Food Program USA (WFP USA) to fund meals for people in Gaza. The global faith leader of the Dawoodi Bohras, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, has made various contributions to feeding the people of Gaza including a donation to WFP USA. During the sacred month of Ramadan of this year, all American Dawoodi Bohra community members have been encouraged to donate individually to WFP USA, as well.

WFP USA aims to galvanize and rally individuals to support the United Nations World Food Programme’s mission to end hunger. The U.N. World Food Programme is on the ground in Gaza delivering emergency food to more than one million people. For over 60 years, they have worked on the frontlines of the worst crises, doing whatever it takes to deliver lifesaving food to families so they can survive upheaval, build resilience and achieve long-term stability.

Gaza is home to the burial site of Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf, the great grandfather of the Prophet Mohammed. He was known for his generosity, especially for feeding pilgrims and others in Mecca. In fact, his name, Hashim, is a reference to an Arab tradition which he is said to have started where bread is broken and soaked in meat broth and served to groups of guests. Inspired by this legacy, the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed which emphasize feeding others, and by the example of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the Dawoodi Bohras plan to continue partnering with WFP USA and other reputed international aid organizations to tackle global food insecurity in an effort towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 of creating a world free of hunger.
