International Women's Day Celebrations

On International Women’s Day 2020, Dawoodi Bohras across the world engaged in meaningful celebration.


Project Rise in association with Saifee Hospital, The Rotary Club of Bombay Midtown and empowHER India conducted Project Good Health - a health camp for nearly 400 adolescent girls and young women in the Karjat Taluka of Maharashtra on Friday the 6th of March, 2020.

The women belong to vulnerable communities which have limited access to medical facilities. Health issues such as anemia, tapeworms, problems related to reproductive health and hygiene were predominant among the women. Many girls also suffered from stunted growth due to sustained malnourishment.

As part of the initiative, a 9 member team of Doctors and Medical Specialists from Saifee Hospital volunteered their time and expertise. Iron and folic acid tablets were dispensed free of cost as well as tablets for deworming.


Community members in Edmonton celebrated the day with a ‘Seniors Meeting’ at the Shaama Centre on the 8th of March, 2020. The Shaama Centre provides services for women and seniors in the larger Edmonton area and community members shared their knowledge with the attendees through the event which was attended by Millwoods MLA Christina Gray and City Councillor Mohinder Banga.

Cardiologist Dr Sajad Gulamhusein gave a presentation on women’s heart health and Pharmacist Murtaza Hassanali spoke about the importance of medication adherence in the overall health of women. The presentations were followed by an interactive question and answer session where participants had a variety of health concerns addressed.

On Friday the 6th of March, 2020, a local gathering of community members marked the birth anniversary of the late His Holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA as well as International Women’s Day. The event, which was a commemoration of Syedna’s many initiatives for women empowerment, commenced with a cake cutting ceremony, followed by photo-ops and henna application.

Short profiles of successful community women were on display to motivate and encourage the younger generation to pursue their dreams. Husbands were also given an opportunity to highlight the importance of their significant others, what they have learnt from them, and how they appreciate them.

Toronto and Mississauga:

Community members in Toronto and Mississauga made generous donations to help women in need. Items such as feminine hygiene products, essential cosmetics, daily implements as well as monetary contributions were gathered, sorted, packed and taken to the Women Empowerment events held by MP Salma Zahid in Toronto and Sakeenah Homes women’s shelter in Mississauga.


Representative from Ladies of London participated in the International Women's Day 'Enable Her Business' event to learn new skills and exchange ideas with like minded female entrepreneurs and established businesswomen.
