The goodwill engendered by both Syedna Taher Saifuddin and Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin continue to strengthen the bond between AMU and the Dawoodi Bohra leadership.

In 2015, the AMU community approached Syedna Saifuddin and requested that he, like his esteemed father and grandfather before him, accept the chancellorship of Aligarh Muslim University. A few months later in April 2015, as per the protocols and guidelines of the University, His Holiness was elected the AMU chancellor with the greatest margin ever seen in an election.

His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin visited Aligarh Muslim University as its chancellor for the very first time, the third Dawoodi Bohra community leader to do so.

Syedna was welcomed at the Chancellor’s Lodge by Vice-Chancellor Lt. Gen. (retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah, Pro-Vice- Chancellor Brigadier (retd.) Syed Ahmad Ali, Pro-Chancellor Nawab Ibne Saeed Khan of Chatari, Frank Fakhrul Islam and other members of the faculty and the AMU fraternity. Syedna paid his respects at Sir Syed’s tomb and masjid and visited the Maulana Azad Library and Aligarh Museum of Science and Culture.

He addressed students of the historic Syedna Taher Saifuddin High School and initiated a large-scale architectural restoration project of heritage buildings on its campus.

Syedna presided over the convocation as Chancellor and addressed the 5,000-strong gathering, providing an enlightening analysis of the Quranic verse and motto of AMU, His Holiness hosted the ‘At Home’ event in which he shared with the thousands of students a poem he had written for the occasion. It was here that the Vice-Chancellor announced Syedna’s intent to provide the AMU high schools with 1,000 computers in order to increase computer literacy.

As part of Aligarh Muslim University’s centenary celebrations, His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, inaugurated the newly constructed centenary gate in an online ceremony on the 17th of October, 2020.

As Chief Guest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Centenary Celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on 22nd December, via video conferencing. PM Modi acknowledged the university’s progress and contributions throughout its 100 year history. He noted AMU’s work in strengthening India’s cultural relations with other countries while extolling the diversity and openness of education at the university, where the Holy Quran is studied alongside Hindu religious scripture and courses are offered in Arabic as well as Sanskrit in addition to a host of other languages and disciplines. Prime Minister Modi equated the AMU campus to a microcosm embodying the values and aspirations of the nation at large. On the occasion, PM Modi also released a special commemorative postal stamp as part of the university’s Centenary Celebrations.

When India was contending with the deadly second wave of Covid-19, His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, donated rupees one crore for medical equipment to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital (JNMCH) at Aligarh.

The donation was made for purchasing fowler beds, oxygen concentrators, Bipap Combo, DVT pumps and Syringe pumps.

In addition to two active vaccination centres, the college made use of the donation to install an oxygen generator plant to ensure adequate supply of oxygen at a time when New Delhi was facing an acute shortage.

On 16th November 2021, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin presided over a special convocation in which Mr Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, was conferred with the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa).

The honorary degree was in recognition of Mr Chandrasekaran’s exemplary leadership of the Tata group of companies and his contributions towards enhancing business thinking and practices in India and elsewhere.

Mr. Chandrasekaran joined the illustrious group of recipients of the AMU’s honoris causa such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dr. C.V. Raman and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. From the corporate world, Mr. Ratan Tata and Azim Premji have received this distinction.
