The Dawoodi Bohra community in Sri Lanka initiated a 14-day food relief program under the banner of Project Rise from 1st September by serving food to hundreds of people in the Colombo and Jaffna districts, which are currently under lockdown and experiencing acute food shortages due to the pandemic as well as various other economic factors.
In the wake of the pandemic, the leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin instructed all Dawoodi Bohra organisations across the world including Sri Lanka to initiate various humanitarian and welfare programmes to support people with cooked meals, dry ration kits, medical supplies and other essentials.
‘Our community members, in collaboration with the Army and Police Force, are distributing freshly cooked food to vulnerable families and medical officers,’ said community volunteer Ali Asgar Mohamedally. ‘These cooked meals are prepared and served keeping in mind safety, hygiene and social distancing guidelines,’ he continued.
This sustained food security program is part of the community’s global philanthropic initiative ‘Project Rise', which is collaborating with local organisations to address global development challenges, including hunger and poverty to climate crisis and education.
