The Burhani Women’s Association in Mississauga, Canada, organised a two day Virtual Bazaar on December 26 and 27, 2020. The event gathered approximately 200 shoppers across the Greater Toronto Area and 20 entrepreneurs from the Mississauga community. Ms Nina Tangri, Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga Streetsville and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation & Trade also participated in the Virtual Bazaar and delivered remarks to the attendees.
The format of the event allowed entrepreneurs to showcase their businesses in 10 minute presentations. During the latter part of the Zoom call, attendees could drop in to virtual breakout rooms depending on which vendors and items interested them.
The entrepreneurs were marketing a variety of businesses, including food and catering services, handbags and purses, paintings and handcrafted items, clothing, gemstones as well as cosmetics. The event was organised with the objective of providing female entrepreneurs with a virtual platform to promote their businesses against the backdrop of restrictions experienced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Durriya Khambati, Secretary of the Mississauga Burhani Women’s Association, in her welcoming speech stated, ‘Our initiative today of the Virtual Bazaar has taken inspiration from the guidance of His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin to create a platform for women in the community to use technology in promoting their businesses.’
MPP Tangri commented, ‘His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin encourages your entrepreneurial community to stay positive and start businesses, and this event is a testament to that guidance.’
Notably, the event also promoted Happy Threads, a social enterprise founded in India with the aim of empowering rural women and providing them with an opportunity to earn a living by creating crocheted and stitched items.
The Mississauga Burhani Women’s Association aims to organise another Virtual Bazaar in the coming months and hopes to invite a greater number of participants and entrepreneurs.
