On Saturday 12th October, Ladies of London hosted an ‘Afternoon Chai’ event to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Drawing inspiration from an existing internationally recognised charity: the Macmillan Coffee Morning, this Afternoon Chai event sold both sweet and savoury items such as cakes, cookies, samosas and masala potatoes, with endless cups of spiced Indian chai.

There was something for every taste, including a table of ‘free from’ items for those with allergies and intolerances. The chai was wheeled around the masjid complex as people donated what they could for a hot cup.

Alongside the sale, community doctors managed an information stall on breast cancer self-examination and cervical cancer screening. Each medical professional provided advice and answered cancer related questions.

Although each item was being sold at £1, many gave above and beyond what was asked. Within 3 hours all the items completely sold out and a substantial amount was raised.

The Ladies of London look forward to their next event, hoping to continue impacting the broader community through charitable work. This event adds to their previous successes for charities including Shooting Star children’s hospice and MIND for better mental health.
