On the 16th of October each year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day to inspire people to fight against global hunger and food wastage.

This year the theme for world food day was to strive for a hunger-free world by the year 2030 and was especially targeted at students and educators.

The Dawoodi Bohra community under the guidance of His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS has made great strides in the fight against hunger and food waste. The FMB and Dana committees successfully strive towards these goals on a daily basis.

To commemorate World Food Day, in keeping with the theme prescribed by the UN, the community’s educational institutes, namely MSB, Madaris and Raudat al-Quran, teamed up with local FMB and Dana committees as well as other NGOs to distribute food to the needy and create awareness about global hunger and prevention of food waste.

Across more than 100 cities world wide, students engaged in four types of activities:

  1. Food banks were set up in more than a 120 community centres worldwide and effectively collected tonnes of non-perishable food items which were then handed over to local charities or to the those in need directly.
  2. Awareness walks were organised with students carrying placards and taking to the streets in order to convey the message of hunger and zero food wastage to society.
  3. Poster making competitions saw students exercise their creative faculties to artistically depict the phenomenon of global hunger and suggest ways in which the problem can be tackled through innovative practices.
  4. Students attended lectures and talks on the subject of global hunger and food waste to broaden their own horizons and appreciate the movement on a more intellectual level.

The activities were an overwhelming success with tonnes of food collected and distributed to those in need. NGOs and local government bodies praised the community for taking up the cause with such discipline and dedication.

Below is a list of all the educational institutes and community centres across the world that took up the cause with passion and enthusiasm.
